Financial inclusion of refugees
The Grameen Crédit Agricole Foundation, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) have joined forces to develop a program that promotes access to credit for refugees and host communities. The Foundation is responsible for managing technical assistance and supporting MFIs to develop a range of products and services tailored to refugee populations.
Financial needs of refugees report
In Uganda, despite a well-structured refugee reception policy that promotes their integration, employment opportunities are limited. Approximately 1.5 million refugees currently live in the country, mostly concentrated in rural areas, where the challenges of finding employment and accessing financing are even greater. It was in these contexts that the program's first study was conducted. Beyond assessing refugees' financial needs, the study identified avenues for further work to better address them.
ILO Social Finance Note
In its new brief, the ILO documented the experiences of several financial service providers (FSPs) working with refugees, including the Uganda Agency for Development Limited (UGAFODE), a partner of the Foundation, which opened a mini-branch in the Nakivale refugee camp in Uganda. This project is part of a program to promote the financial inclusion of refugees launched by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), and the Grameen Crédit Agricole Foundation.
