Context :
Kenya is a middle-income country. Agriculture plays a very important role, with the livestock sector contributing nearly 10 billion US dollars to the GDP and supporting approximately 1.8 million people. The tea sector generates approximately 1.5 billion US dollars, and Kenya is the world's leading exporter of black tea.
The company:
Yehu is a microfinance institution whose mission is to combat poverty by empowering poor rural entrepreneurs in Kenya to help them escape poverty through improved access to sustainable financial services. This includes enabling them to save while also providing access to microloans, which can be used to start or expand their small businesses. Yehu also offers business training, microinsurance products, and other services to improve the lives of its members.
Impact :
Yehu strives to become the preferred MFI in rural Kenya with a strong social vision of empowering socioeconomically marginalized people. The institution primarily offers loans in the agricultural sector, but also offers working capital for starting or expanding a business, purchasing commercial assets, and loans to finance education expenses, among other financial products.
