As the 2015 deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) approaches, estimates produced by the World Bank confirm that the goal of reducing poverty by half has been achieved 5 years before the 2015 deadline: in developing countries, 47% of the population lived on less than $1.25 a day in 1990; in 2010 this rate had fallen to 22%.
